VIDEO : Freerunning Frenzy (Damien Walters 2009)

It's not often you see soo many high impact and extremely technical moves jam-packed into one video...

...in this video Damien does just that!

Freerunning at a different level to most, and certainly very inspiring to watch. (Even though some of it looks impossible to imitate)

PKSA : Leave No Trace

The “PKSA : Leave No Trace” project was created to support a growing movement that has been going on for a number of years now amongst the global parkour and freerunning communities.

PKSA : Leave No Trace

A project where community members get together and clean up their local training grounds. Primarily to clean up the very grounds we train on so regularly as well as to give back to the local community and prove we care for our environment and it's obstacles, plus as a safety measure to remove any glass and other obstructions that may cause injuries when training there.

To read up more on this topic, visit our forums: http://www.parkour.co.za/forums/viewforum.php?f=37

South Africa's first cleanup was held in Centurion on Sunday 17th May 2009, and will certainly be the first of many across the country.

The day started out with:

  • PKSA : Leave No Trace8 guys
  • 1 Dirty Training Area (Standard Bank, Centurion Mall)
  • 1 Photographer (Thanks El!)

...and eventually ended up with:

  • 8 Proud PKSA members (plus 1 late arrival just as we finished. Timing is everything...)
  • 2 Plastic bags of rubbish (Regular Black Bin Bags)
  • 1 Pair of random shoes
  • 1 Bottle containing questionable liquid contents
  • 1 Belwildered, yet very friendly, security guard
  • 1 Clean Training Area!

So clean, in fact, that when we finished up we immediately went for a quick training session! (With one of the guys promptly leaving some skin behind on one of the small facebrick walls after a minor bail... OUCH! But it was quickly fixed up and he was back training in no time.)

Many thanks goes out to everyone who attended, and know that you have done your part for the environment and our training grounds. But it does not end there. We hope to see you soon at the next one. :-)

The Physics of Free Running

For all you Maths freaks out there...

Popular Science have been playing around with some numbers and come up with a few interesting figures relating to the very movements we take for granted while out training.

http://www.popsci.com/entertainment-amp-gaming/article/2009-05/physics-free-running

I do have a slight issue with a few of their figures, as we cannot be sure on the exact height (PKSA does not recommend anyone try jumping from this height seen in the video!!), plus the ground force exerting pressure upwards (Fground) on the landing depends on the type of foundation of the surface you land on. PLUS there is a significant angled forward movement on the landing, rather than merely dropping 90 degrees perpedicular to the ground. Then there is the minimal cushioning from the shoe itself which does help...

Some surfaces (even cement, tar and other harder surfaces) give more leeway as you land on them due to thinner foundations underneath, minimising that force and pressure. For instance shopping mall concrete floors have very little movement, and are probably one of the worst surfaces to land on from a drop.

But the article does highlight the importance of landing with your knees bent, on the balls of your feet as well as exiting into a parkour roll. All these will help absorb and minimise the impact, ensuring a safer journey through your future training.

All in all not bad, and does go a long way to creating awareness around what we do and the importance of drilling safety techniques while out in the real world training.

Give credit, where credit is due... (Video)

I get sent loads of e-mails with videos, either on youtube or actual attachments over the months, and every now and again one comes along that shakes your boots and inspires you to the core!

This is one of those videos... (youtube link)

It may not be the conventional form of parkour or free running, but this guy has "it". His spacial awareness and abilities are out of this world and a MUST SEE for anyone involved in parkour. Goes to show that we are not yet finished proving what the human body, and a bike, are capable of.

Watch, enjoy, learn... be inspired!
